On March 30th, local time, the EXPO HSK was held at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma De Mexico (UNAM). This is the first time that this series of expositions was held in Latin America. This event was sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and jointly organized by Escuela Nacional de Lenguas, Lingüística y Traduccion (ENALLT) of UNAM and the Confucius Institute at UNAM. Eleven top universities in China, including Peking University, Tsinghua University and Fudan University, participated in it and met face-to-face with Mexican students and local people who had an inclination to study in China. Mexican Association of Chinese Enterprises, with 55 members, provided employment counseling at the event.

Present at the opening ceremony were Carmen Contijoch, Dean of ENALLT, Gloria Ornelas Hall, Director of the student exchange office at UNAM, and Yang Hong, Head of the Education Division of the Chinese Embassy in Mexico as well as Liu Xiaolong, Director of HSK International Examination Department. Li Cheng, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute, presided over the ceremony.

In his speech, Carmen Contijoch reviewed the history of Chinese language teaching and HSK examinations at UNAM. Since 1974, UNMA has been offering Chinese in an uninterrupted manner, especially since the beginning of the 21st century. In 2008, the Confucius Institute was established at UNAM. By now, its total enrollment has exceeded 10,000. Since the HSK test was first held in 2004, more and more learners have taken the test, and the total number of participants has reached nearly 4,500. In 2017, this test center was also awarded the“HSK Excellent Test Center”by the Confucius Institute Headquarters.

In her speech, Yang Hong emphasized that this expo was the first EXPO HSK ever held in Latin America and this event was of great significance to the popularization of HSK in Latin America. At the same time, she encouraged Mexican students to actively learn Chinese, to strive for an opportunity to study in China and to contribute to China-Mexico friendship.

Liu Xiaolong pointed out that the total number of HSK takers worldwide has exceeded 800,000, especially in Latin America where the number is steadily increasing. This expo aimed to facilitate Chinese universities in their recruitment of Mexican students to study in China, and to allow Mexican students to learn more about opportunities to study in China.

According to statistics collected after the expo, over 800 Mexican students participated in this event.

Through this event, the participating universities promoted their advantages, and Mexican students, on the other hand, could choose suitable universities according to their own interests. Pleased with the good result of the expo, UNAM hoped that the expo could be held regularly, so that more Chinese universities would come to Mexico to publicize themselves and attract more Mexican students to study in China, thus adding to the friendship between the two countries.
